Shall we dance?

2010 February 4

So as I’m moving back to New Orleans I’m getting super pumped for the next three weeks – Saints Superbowl and then Mardi Gras. Does it get any better than this?!

As I’m sure we’ll have even more reason to celebrate by day’s end on Sunday one would of course want to party. Now I just need to find a Mardi Gras ball to go to so I can show my Saints pride and celebrate Carnival all at the same time. And if it could be in this outfit it’d be even better.

I found this gorgeous gold brocade and sheer black dress while looking for Fleur de lis attire. It’s from the most adorable vintage shop and website, Small Earth Vintage.

Mask is from buycostumes.com and this adorable heel is Nina Elga which you can purchase at piperlime.

Ah, my NOLA

2010 February 2

Hello dear readers,

I have some bittersweet news to share with you. It seems that in the war of the Occasional Enthusiast vs. the Recession I have lost this round and will be leaving my beloved New York to return to my native New Orleans. I’ll miss sharing my big city finds and random meanderings with you all but rest assured I will not be ceasing in my posts. Nay, in fact I plan to redouble my efforts for your reading pleasure!

So get ready for even better design, fashion, travel and random finds from the city that has always had my heart, New Orleans. I can’t wait to share it with yall!

In the meantime, here’s some photographic evidence to support my theory of why New Orleans is one of the best cities in the world. Just look at the fandamonium taking place in the antique and vintage shops on historic Magazine St. for the upcoming Saints Superbowl! WHO DAT!!!!!

To Klaus!

2010 January 31

Apparently the 600-year-old skull of German pirate Klaus Stoertebeker was stolen from a Hamburg museum last week. The skull had a spike driven through it after ole Klausy boy and an unknown number of his followers were beheaded. Their heads were then nailed on display at the entrance of the Hamburg harbor as a deterrent to future would-be pirates.

Now what would one do with a 600-year-old stolen pirate skull with a nail sticking out of it? Sell it on the black market? Or perhaps prop it up on your mantle in your home and revel in its awesomeness?  And maybe offer it a toast of rum from time to time?  Duh, the latter is obviously what I would do. To Klaus!

Posterize it

2010 January 28

So, this may be one of the best sites for prints ever. Poster Cabaret allows you to buy concert and movie posters from some amazing artists. I’ve put up a few of my favorites below. I’d love to get a few of these up  in that future apartment that magically has tons of wall space. Dare to dream….

This is how you decorate when you have no money

2010 January 9

Remember when I bought these photos and wanted to do something along the lines of  this with them? Well, I finally got around to adding them to my postcard photos collection and putting them up on my wall. It’s still a work in progress but I’m going through a few possibilities at the moment. I still have some postcards left over, but it’s no where near the number I really want. I’m debating on either filling the wall with them (something I’m sure my landlord would kill me for) or getting some old antique frames and just putting them around the collage as if it were one big image. Here’s what I have so far.

At the moment, the photos run into my jewelry table and necklaces. If I fill the wall I’ll simply incorporate them into the overall image.

.

As I said, I’d like to get some frames to anchor this as a giant image on the wall. If course if I could paint (yet again, something my landlord forbids) I’d simply cover the wall with the delicious grayish-purple color of my current favorite bag and forgo the frame idea. But, as a compromise I suppose I could paint the frame instead. These disgusting beige walls (why landlord, why?!) need some color anyway. Frame and color ideas below. Feedback anyone? Let me know what you think!

Use your head

2010 January 7

oooooo! OOOOOOO! So apparently Christie’s got their hands on an original Skull & Bones (Yale’s all-male secret society, see here for history) ballot box dating back from 1872. And it’s made from, yep you guessed it, actual human skull and bones! This is awesome. And sick. But more awesome than sick.

.

This news of course led me to look for skull inspired fashions (hey, it’s a thing) and I found these gems. Ooo-la-la.

.

I also found this. It’s from Sibling. I like to think this is what today’s Yale secret society members wear to their clandestine meetings. I can not wait to see this on someone in NYC. I just know I will.

Back in the New York groove

2010 January 1

Hello readers! Happy New Year! I’ve been remiss in my postings over the holidays, for which I apologize. But I’m back in New York with a new year, a new job, and a new outlook. And to get back in the New York groove and fuel said outlook one needs coffee. And where better to get it than my favorite spot in the city to grab a cup of joe – Irving Place Coffee & Tea .

On Irving and East 19th, in the heart of Gramercy, this place has the best atmosphere and they roast all their grinds at Irving Farms upstate. I love coming here. They also serve wine. What’s not to love? And the best part? It’s a short walk from my new office!

It’s good to be home

I’m back home in Louisiana for the holidays. New Orleans, does it get any better than this? I think not.

Something about these photos, from a rather interesting article on how farmers and environmentalists are fighting to bring back the American buffalo, are just breathtaking. By photographer Peter Frank Edwards, they’re so Americana and majestic looking. I want to frame a series of them and cover a whole wall. Preferably in that lodge in Montana I’ll own one day. Here’s a sample of my favorites.
